What it is made of

A molded plastic head, curved stainless steel blades with the sharpened edge on the inside, and a rubberized grip handle with a hole to hang it by.

Small or large head

It comes with a small head or a large head, in five colors. We have not put a ruler on either head, so we are not printing a head width or a blade count here. The large head covers more coat per stroke on a big double coated dog. The small head is easier to steer around ears, armpits and legs.

Cleaning and storage

Pull the hair out of the blades with your fingers, rinse the head under the tap, then stand it up to dry so water does not sit between the blades. It is steel, so drying it matters more than washing it.

Questions people ask first

Will it cut my dog?
Not if you keep it flat to the coat and let the blade do the work. The edge is on the inside of each blade, facing the mat, not on the tip. What causes trouble is forcing a stroke through a tight mat sitting against skin. Hold the base of the mat with your free hand, work its outer edge first, and stop if the skin lifts with the stroke. If a mat is tight to the skin and will not open after a few passes, leave it for the groomer. That is a mat past the point of combing, not the tool failing. Used carelessly on a squirming dog, any bladed rake can nick skin, and we would rather say so here than let you find out.
How is this different from the brush I already have?
A slicker brush has fine wire pins that comb the top coat and straighten what is already loose. It skates over a mat. This is a dematting rake, and the blades split the mat instead. They are not competing tools, they are two stages of the same job, and most people who own one own both. If you have been brushing every day and still finding mats, the brush is not the problem. It never reaches the layer the mats are in.

My dog hates being brushed.
Then do not start with a mat. Start with the fine side on a patch of coat that has no tangles in it, for one minute, and stop while it is still going well. Most of what dogs object to is the pulling, and the pulling comes from mats. A lot of the fight goes away once the coat is open. If your dog is genuinely frightened of grooming tools, a rake is not the place to fix that.
It is not getting through the mat. What do I do?
Three things, in order. Check you are on the wide side and not the fine side. Break the mat up with your fingers first, from the outside in. Then work the outer edge of it with short strokes instead of trying to drive through the middle. If it still will not open, the mat is tight to the skin and it needs scissors or clippers in someone else's hands. Do not keep pulling.
Can I use it on a short haired dog, or on a cat?
On a short single coat there is not much for it to do, and a rubber curry or a grooming glove is the better tool. Plenty of people use rakes like this on cats, but cat skin is thinner and looser than dog skin and we have not tested it on one, so we are not going to tell you it is fine.
Does it work on a wet coat, and how do I clean it?
Use it dry. A wet mat tightens as it dries and gets harder to open, and the blades drag. To clean it, pull the hair out of the blades with your fingers, rinse the head under the tap, and stand it up to dry so water does not sit between the blades. It is steel, so drying it matters more than washing it.
What if it arrives damaged, or I just do not like it?
Either way, email support@reliablegoods.net with your order number. If it turned up damaged, send a photo and we sort it out, you are not paying for that.
